The man pictured is Xu Wei, the 50-year-old head of China Central Television’s (CCTV’s) general construction. Even though he has been with CCTV since 1983, and headed up the construction department since 2005, Beijing police took him away after the tragic Mandarin Oriental Hotel Fire on February 9th. CCTV wasted no time apologizing for the fire and then pointing to Xu as the one responsible. It is suspected that he gave the OK to host the fireworks display that caused the damage. According to the police, these fireworks were used illegally since there was no permit granted. There has been no further official word about Xu since his detention but it is suspected that he is in custody.
Compare that with what has been going on in the U.S. where hundreds of bankers and rogue investment managers have been swindling innocents for years. As far as I know, there is still very little accountability. Bernie Madoff, the Ponzi scheme entrepreneur is still free to roam the streets of New York and live in his penthouse apartment while he awaits trial. Most of the other unnamed investment bankers got a free pass. Some even received bonuses. Accountability has a very different meaning in China.
